TOP 10 RESUME TIPS

WRITE YOUR RESUME IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

Write your own resume and have a number of different versions for different positions you may be applying for.

TELL WAR STORIES.

Make a list of all the work or volunteer experiences you have had that support your candidacy for the job. Select the best ones and write them so that they show what Problems you’ve solved, Actions you’ve taken to do this, and the bottom line Results you’ve achieved. For example: Managed the design, equipment selection, installation, and start-up of a four-aisle, man-aboard storage and order-picking system 35 feet high and 120 feet long, handling 6,000 items. Project was completed on time within the $400,000 budget.

KNOW WHAT FORMAT TO USE

The two most commonly used and accepted resume formats are the chronological and the functional.

KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE

Your resume and every interaction in your job search should answer the question to the employer – “Why should I hire you?

KNOW YOUR VOCABULARY

Action verbs are the foundation of good writing. Use them liberally throughout your resume to communicate your accomplishments: Developed, streamlined, pioneered, implemented, produced etc.

PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD.

People remember what they see first and last, so place your least important information in the middle. Have an objective or a key word summary at the beginning and end your document with strong content – such as your educational background.

USE RESUME ETIQUETTE.

The word resume does not belong any place on the document. Never use “I” to start out a sentence. The language of your resume should be specific, clear, succinct, positive, and exciting. Make it easy for someone to contact you.

TELL THE TRUTH

Tell the truth about your education, work experience and your key achievements.

GET SOME OBJECTIVE FEEDBACK

Have others who have not worked as closely with the resume as you have read it and check for accuracy and typographical errors.

YOUR RESUME IS ONLY THE START

Remember that your resume is only one element of your job search strategy. It’s important and needs to get you in the door, yet cover letters, email fax and telephone interactions will extend your conversation with prospecting employers and further evidence of your ability to do the job.

TOP 10 INTERVIEW TIPS

RESEARCH

Companies want to know how interested you are in the position and the company. Always look at a company’s website and Google any recent relevant news items.

PRACTICE ANSWERING YOUR BEHAVIOURAL QUESTIONS

Questions such as “what is your greatest strength?” and “what did you enjoy most about your time with your previous company”. common behavioural interview questions.

BE ON TIME

Arrive at least 10-15 minutes early for your interview.

BE ENGAGED

Turn off your mobile phone and any other devices, and devote your full attention to the interviewer, making appropriate eye contact.

FOLLOW UP

A Thank You is always appreciated by interviewers and recruiters alike.

PRACTICE ANSWERING TECHNICAL AND NON QUESTIONS

Be prepared, although you may be getting interviewed for a technical position you could also be asked to demonstrate your non technical or soft skills.

REVIEW THE DESCRIPTION

Before you engage in any interview, nail down the specific position they are evaluating you against. Read the job description thoroughly and ask your recruiter any questions prior to your interview.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS

Play it safe by being conservative, neat, clean and professional. If in doubt always over dress for the interview.

REMAIN COMPOSED

Interviews can be a tough experience if things go wrong. Whether it’s your fault or not always keep your cool and remain composed at all times during an interview.

DON'T LET THEM FORGET ABOUT YOU

Your interviews are over, and you survived. Now you wait, but don’t wait too long, if you have heard nothing after a couple of days contact your recruiter and politely ask if a result has been reached and if there is any feedback.
